Athletics comprises of a wide range of sporting events and requires a variety of skills and techniques from the athletes. It includes both indoor and outdoor events with the main competition categories of track and field, race walking, road running and cross-country running.
Sport psychology (or sports psychology) is the scientific study of the psychological factors that influence performance in sports. Sport psychology professionals aim to increase athletic performance by instilling mental toughness and minimizing the psychological effects of poor performance.
Mental health is just as important as physical health when training for a sport. Four factors contribute to this health: mental, emotional, social and meta-mental (reflection, discussion). Each factor works together with the rest to influence performance in sport, exercise, and physical activity. Before we talk further about mental skills training ask yourself the following questions:

Mental skills, just like physical skills must be practiced to make them automatic (well learned).
When mental skills are ingrained, you can easily apply them to competition.
Goal setting, positive self-talk, mental imagery and mental rehearsal, and relaxation PST methods have all been proven to improve the psychological skills self-confidence, control activation, and arousal regulation, amongst others, as well as enhancing the actual physical athletic performance of an athlete.
To improve these psychological skills, the athlete will complete sessions using goal setting, imagery and relaxation. The program consists of three main phases:: Educational Phase - developing the understanding and importance of PST and how it can affect performance. Acquisition Phase - Athletes learn how to use PST methods and how best to implement them. Practice Phase - devote time and effort to PST and complete training in both competition and practice (Horn, 2002). Fournier et al.
Simply put, the effect sport has on mental health cannot be overstated. Research has and continues to validate how a powerful mind positively affects physical performance in practice and competition.
